Endangered Species
1. For this activity, you will investigate causes of endangerment and efforts being taken to conserve species.
2. As a group of 3 you will complete the following projects. Click on the Panther eyes above to get to the web site you will need to complete this activity.
A. Design a Reserve:
Choose a species under Case Studies (see vanishing link) and imagine a reserve that would meet the needs of that species and encourage recovery. Design a "Visitors' Pamphlet" for the Reserve. Include:
1. A short description of the reserve, what kind of habitat is it and were should it be located.
2. An informational section tat describes the species and reasons for its endangerment.
3. List of rules for the Reserve. What kinds of
activities are allowed/prohibited? (ex. No Hunting)
B. Investigate Illegal trade in wildlife:
Find out what animals are endangered due to illegal wildlife trade. (See C.I.T.E.S and Endangered Species Act and Asian Medicines under spotlight)
Choose 4 species that are exploited due to illegal trade. Make an outline that includes the following:
Species Name:
Habitat:
Illegal Trade Market:
Other Causes of Endangerment:
Conservation Efforts:
Create your own Endangered Species Act. List the Laws you would enact in order to protect species endangered by exploitation. You should have 5 laws.
C. Design a chart that compares patterns of endangerment or extinction. The chart should include the following information: species, scientific name, classification (mammal, reptile, bird), location, habitat, population decline over time, and causes of endangerment. Include at least 10 species. Next summarize what patterns or trends that you find from this data. (short paragraph)
