INTRODUCTION

Welcome to "Universal Travel" Web Quest! In this Webquest you will explore the planets in our Solar System.  You will learn lots of exciting facts and see some really cool photos.

TASK
You and your team have been chosen to promote intergalactic travel.  Your team will analyze information about the different planets in our Solar System and choose a planet for a new vacation resort.  Take notes on each planet to use later in creating your products.  Your team must provide reasons for the choice you make.  Each team will complete the following activities: 

1.   Identify planets from pictures, location in our Solar System, and basic physical characteristics.
2.  As a team, research three planets in detail to choose location for resort.
3.  Create group products                     
4.  Create individual travel brochure
5.  Evaluate web sites used
6.  Evaluate team members

PRODUCTS

As a group choose and complete each of the following sections.  All members of the group should contribute equal amounts of work.  THE FOLLOWING LISTS GIVE SUGGESTIONS FOR PROJECTS.  IF YOU HAVE OTHER IDEAS GET THEM APPROVED BY YOUR TEACHER BEFORE BEGINNING.   

IDENTIFY ALL PLANETS IN ORDER FROM THE SUN AND/OR FROM THEIR PICTURES 

(Choose one activity per team member)

        1.       Make a picture book of all the planets in our Solar System

2.     Make a poster of our Solar System

3.     Build a model of our Solar System

4.     Build a diorama of our Solar System  

5.    Organize information about planets into a matrix

6.    Make a board game to teach the planets to another student.

 

DEMONSTRATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE PLANETS YOUR GROUP RESEARCHED

(Choose one activity  per group, be prepared to explain how all team members participated)

        1.       Make a picture book of the planets with facts and information 
                  (DON’T DUE IF YOU DID #1 IN THE FIRST SECTION)

2.     Write lyrics to a familiar tune that teach the facts you learned.  Provide words and a tape of your group performing the song (video or audio) this may be taped by appointment before school, during lunch, or after school

3.     Make a data disc about the planets you researched

4.     Use Excell to make a matrix of planets and facts

5.     Write a one page report about each of the planets you researched

6.     Make a video or audio tape of a newscast or interview show, this may be taped by appointment before school, during lunch, or after school  

7.     Make a poster comparing and contrasting the three planets you researched.  (DON'T DO IF YOU DID POSTER IN FIRST SECTION)

 

EXPLAIN YOUR COLONY:   (Each group member must make one)

1.       Make a brochure to encourage tourists to visit your colony.

*  Include planet name, size, location, and important facts

*  Colony name? What is there? Slogan or “catchy” phrase?

*  Include photo, color, artwork, etc.

*  Give reasons for choosing the location of your new colony

Use the following sites to collect information for your individual and group products.  Be sure to keep track of websites used by filling out a webliography sheet for each site used.  Take notes as you work.

EVALUATION

Webliography
Students will fill out a chart for each webpage they use in gathering infomation.
Group Rubric
Each student will fill out a rubric for their group members (includes self assessment)
Evaluation of Student Work Rubric
Each student will recieve a completed rubric from teacher showing self assessment, group assessment, and teacher assessment of their work.
